July 31 - FCD 5, Los Angeles 6

You read the score correct, 11 goals in this game...the team fought hard to try to comeback, but the four early goals proved too much to overcome...Arturo scored his second and third SuperLiga goals...the crowd was the largest to see and FC Dallas game at Pizza Hut Park...below Steve's post-game comments on the game (Juan's answers were in Spanish and since we wanted to quickly post, we didn't include them)...

On the injury front, Clarence has a right sprained MCL - he slightly hurt himself last Saturday in the Pachuca game, but felt ok and even trained fully on Monday...however, when he arrived to the stadium today his pain had increased, so he was put through a pre-game test...he came out of it feeling uncomfortable, so he was left off...

Ricardinho has a right hamstring injury - he'll need further evaluation before determining the extent of the injury...

Arturo and Carlos were both x-rayed following the game...Artie has a right shoulder sprain and despite the swelling in Fish's right foot, the x-rays did not reveal a broken bone.

Great comeback and heart shown.

Serioux needs more speed.

Pitchkolan, not sure what kind of marking was that on the last LA goal (which, freakishly, turned out to tbe game winner as Abe Thompson scored a minute later). Donovan has the ball and Serioux has him stood up, Pitchkolan leaves Pavon and starts toward Donovan (and Serioux), Landon slots a perfect pass back, and of course Pitchkolan did not get back in time. Huge mistake, don't leave someone unmarked in the box.

Hopefully those that came to see Becks as least got a taste of how fun FCD can be at the very nice PHP and will come back.

With the introduction of Ricardhino in addition to Toja, and improving Alvarez, and possibly an awakening Ruiz, I like FCDs chances the second half of the season. They will make the playoffs for certain. Time to go deep into them and win the Cup.

Lets qualify for next season's SuperLiga and win it. FCD deserved 6 points from the first two games (poor officiating on the Chivas goal and the horrible call on the disallowed Goodson header vs. Pachuca).

I was very disappointed tonight with how FCD started but the last 70 minutes of the game, the boys really and truly showed something that Morrow can build off of. Thanks to the players for their heart and determination and not quitting.

Lets get the back line organized and win the MLS Cup.

Disappointing start but great comeback. Favorite part of the game - yellow card for Donovan's cocky gesture to the crowd. Classic.

See you at Saturday's game. Let's get a win, Hoops!

Good thing we played with four in the back; otherwise we might have lost the game.

Everyone in the main stream complains about no offense in soccer, now I guess they can complain about no defense. Fun to watch whichever side you're on in the arguement.

Shelby said...

Man... we sure missed Goodson. Could of used him on that first corner and so that Drew could of been out on the right against Landon instead of Rhine..

Anonymous said...

This game just scared me for the playoffs...we showed a lot of heart the last 70 mins but in the playoffs you cant give away 4 goals to a team in 20 mins.

starinyourfire said...

i'm still proud of this team, this is a team to root for!

Anonymous said...

Let Sala and Ruiz go with Nunez. Bring back Burse!

Anonymous said...

Goodson was definately missed tonight. Sala looked a little stiff to start. Hopefully this outpouring of goals will feed into FCD's attack the last part of the season.

It was nice to see the team keep at it. Great effort Hoops!

I have been feeling all season long that Goodson's play has been the glue that binds this team. Tonight was proof of that. Don't get me wrong...I like Rhine's heart and gutty play throughout Superliga...Serioux is rounding into shape, Gbandi has been mostly good, and Drew is very steady. But it is Goodson that makes them play as a formidable unit. He was sorely missed tonight.

Anonymous said...

The officiating at all of these Superliga games is appalling...where did they get these guys? Also, does anyone like Landon Donovan? He demonstrated why I cannot stand him...glad he got a yellow card for his behavior!

Anonymous said...

The coach was not the reason we got behind by 4 goals tonight, but his subbing I think is what brought us back to almost tie. I really like his read of the game and the confidence he has in his players.

Anonymous said...

Donovan's little tantrum was choice. It sucks when your basking light turns to another player.

Agreed...Morrow made some great subs to adjust.

Anonymous said...

Hey!

Let the guys know that we apprecicate the great effort shown! Okay, the defense was non-existent for 20 horrible minutes, but then . . .

- horrible reffing
- dirty playing by the LA players (how many times can they trip people and not get called??) & despictable behavior by a member of the US NT. I had no opinion of him before -- I do now!
-- and Toja DOES NOT DIVE. Worst call of the match. Should have been a PK.
-- AWESOME goals by Alvarez, Toja, Ruiz, & Abe!

Tell the guys we'll be there on Saturday! Beat Colorado!

Morrow's decision to move Moor into the middle, leaving Rhine to mark Landy was the killer decision.

Big nuts on Steve though to make the change to pull Bobby when he did and it really changed the match. Too bad he didn't do it a goal earlier...

Anonymous said...

Can you post Juan's answers later? PLeeeeesssaaae???

Anonymous said...

You're not kidding Toja dosen't dive! Toja's a man. Even after getting the yellow he got up ready to keep playing. Toja is nothing short of awesome.

Travis said...

I don't know where their heads were going in to this game. It was like a totally different team. Morrow made some great subs though, and once they got that first goal the boys really started showing some heart.

I'm proud of their effort the 2nd half.

The reffing in this tournament has been horrendous, but you can't blame the loss tonight on the refs.

Anonymous said...

I think the thing that bothers me most over the 3 games is that not one single player came over to the fans in appreciation of their support. They had some of the best support these 3 games and it was if they don't care that we came.

Anonymous said...

wow, sala stunk it up, he let just about every shot on target into the goal. i think the early 4-0 deficit was caused by our overconfidence, and we payed for it with a loss and elimination from superliga. once again, the reffing was horrendous. i was at the game, and found the fo's effort to show anti-becks signs on the jumbotrons to be really sad. i dont think they accomplished anything other than rubbing the harsh reality further in fans' faces.

Anonymous said...

Are you sure you were at the Chivas game. I was and given the rough play and Chivas fans throwing trash at Moore, it's understandable that the FCD players left.

Anonymous said...

First and foremost - hats off to the men in red and white. That was one of the gutsiest performances I have ever seen. Made me appreciate this squad even more than I already did.

Oh - not sure if the post was here or on 3rddegree, but I'll volunteer to run the "Toja for MVP" campaign. Heck, I'll start the "Toja for President" campaign.

Did anyone else notice that the little kid assigned to hold Landycakes' hand during the pre-game introductions was just as tall as him? I think Donovan just proved that he is a classless jerk. He's worse than that, but all I'm allowed to post here. I hope his hairline recedes even farther.

The boys did a great job to fight back, but what can you do when you also have to play against the referee. Was Tim Donaghy somehow involved with the SuperLiga officiating? Did anyone check the point spreads in Vegas? I really am shocked at how bad, collectively!, the games have been officiated. Can we get Mark Cuban to start bugging the league office and send them tapes to review? Hmm - maybe we can get him to help with the "Toja for MVP" campaign? How about it, Mark? Put up a billboard for Juan?

Anonymous said...

FCD staff and front office need to partner with the fan base for a Toja MVP campaign. He deserves it based on his play so far and is only getting better.

CKeltner said...

We cant expect to win when giving up six goals no matter how bad the reffing is. I also do not think we can win a championship with the defense we have even if goodson, the shawn bradley of soccer, is in the lineup. We need a vocal leader in the back to sort things out to cut down on all of the defensive breakdowns. Hopefully coach morrow will trade for a quality defender when ramon is traded away.

Shanon said...

I was at the game, but was at the far end of the stadium and could not see what Donavon did after the goal, anyone on that side of the field that could shed some light?

Anonymous said...

He put his thumb up to his neck and drew it across - visualize slashing one's throat.... all aimed at the fans.. classy move, huh?

Aaron said...

Great offense from both teams, but horrible defending and officiating. The referees in ALL of the superliga games have been horrendous (not just FCD's), they have let games like tonight's get out of hand way too easily.

Does anyone think there is any way that we could slide this contest back a month for next year and get EPL refs for the next superliga? It would be a good preseason tuneup for them and would be a welcome addition (at least from the beer-league officiating from this year).

Seems like Morrow needs a lesson in coaching. Coaching 101 Mr. Morrow - when your team loses YOU take the blame. When your team wins give THEM the credit. Rookie mistake for an apparently new coach.

Donovan is a classless punk. I hope he never plays for the USMNT again.

Anonymous said...

"Donovan is a classless punk. I hope he never plays for the USMNT again."

I agree. But as long as we have a pack of nincapoops running US Soccer they will keep their precious "Face of US Soccer" on the team as long as they can. Hopefully, his childish throat slash will open some eyes so what a real classes jerk he is.

Anonymous said...

I am glad I was there to witness the tremendous come-back! What heart! What sportsmanship! A class organization that we can be VERY proud of! A pat on the back to us fans for staying behind them. This team deserves all the accolades we can give them...GO FCD!

Anonymous said...

The game drove me crazy. The main problem with FCD was the initial lack of motivation. In the end the game was extremely fun and should translate into extra ticket sales for FCD. The FO got soooooooooo lucky. I was sure that the Beckham no-show was going to be a black eye but it won't be for the people that made it to the game or watched on TV.

Anonymous said...

Donovan does some dumb stuff but he's cool with me as long as he keeps beating Mexico for the Nats.

Anonymous said...

Donovan - when is the last time he scored a USMNT goal that was not a PK? Against a quality opponent?

Exactly - USMNT doesn't need him.

Anonymous said...

I would love to actually see Tajo's responses to press questions. I'll forgive the FO over ticket prices if they edit his responses back into the clip.

Anonymous said...

Well we managed to blow it again. We play the one of the worst teams in the league and manage to also allow them to score 4 goals in less than 20 min.HORRIBLE! EMBARASSING for all the fans that came out.. Ya it was fun to see all those goals but the truth of the matter is we TRUE soccer FANS want to WIN not loose 6-5!!!

My thoughts start with the line-up.Acutally just the back line. BOBBY RHINE???? Why is he starting at all and why is he playing Defender and Why is he marking Landon???? What are you thinking Coach?? Sala was hurt. He did not even dive for any of the first 3 goals and the ones he did dive for looked like he was 60 years old and was having trouble even walking more less play a professional soccer game. Drew Moore is horrible. He plays well every other game and the other ones he plays well in its just always only juts goot enough. Its never anything special. Gbandi played well and Serioux also was ok. SO I guess in my opinion the main factor to the loss was those three players RHINE, MOORE, SALA. If you were to have HISLOP and thrown Dax in for RHINE and move Dax inside behind TOJA and move Serioux to mark Landon. Trade MOORe and start working on something else because he is garbage. SORRY!

Anonymous said...

OK, to the IDIOT who made the last post. Goodson and Yi did/could not play, moving Moore inside and starting Rhine was the only option.

Maybe Burse should have played, but I hardly put much blame for any of the goals on Sala.

Serioux is WAY TOO SLOW to mark Donovan.

P.S. - FCD did not "loose" the game, learn to spell.

Anonymous said...

"we TRUE soccer FANS want to WIN not loose 6-5!!!"

Sorry, but as the President of the World's Only TRUE Soccer Fans Club (WOTSFC), you are wrong. We TRUE fans actually enjoy seeing goals scored. We, TRUE soccer fans, have decided that scoring goals should be the object of the game for the teams participating in the game.

Shanon said...

Now that I know what Landon did, I think it is kind of cool!

You have to look at it in the context of the game. FCD was a dragon that would not die in this one. Every time LA thought that they had this game one ice the Hoops came roaring back. The FCD goal that was scored right before Landon's caused most of the stadium to get on their feet and believe that this thing was going to happen. Then Landon's goal was a dagger to the heart (at least to mine). I don't think that he was being disrespectful to the fans, I think he was saying "I killed the beast, this game is done!"
Pretty Cool if you ask me

Anonymous said...

Shanon - not cool, not smart. In fact STUPID. Using your analogy, the dragon wasn't even close to being killed. It was like poking the dragon with a stick and proclaiming it dead.

Other major sports leagues fine players and suspend them for the throat slash. MLS should do the same. 3 games and $2500

Anonymous said...

shannon, you are really reaching on that one. classless act that draws a huge penalty and fine in NFL, NBA, etc.

Anonymous said...

Not too up in arms over Donovan. Only thing I would have done differently is the arm motion of an incomplete pass in football to signal it was done. And, to be technical, it wasn't a "throat slash" in the traditional sense; that is with your thumb, while his motion was more of his whole hand. I thought the "Game over" part was cool in and of itself though.

All of that said, I will continue to support Donovan when he is on the USMNT or if he goes abroad. I love MLS, but the USMNT is bigger IMO. Great effort by the team tonight, but the crappy defending and 18 minute lapse was just too much. Sala shouldn't have started, and shouldn't until he's better; Burse is fine (whoever suggested Hislop is smoking crack). And Rhine is HORRIBLE, and shows again why he should NEVER be a starting player much less a RB. Supersub/Utilityman? fine. Would have rather had Pitch or DelloRusso in from the start.

Good showing by the crowd too.

Wow....11 goals

Some thoughts on last night's officiating:

I know ref’s will always make Bad calls or good calls that are unpopular, but wow, amazing what Google can find…

"Two minutes later, a long ball by Dunivant fell inside the box for Gomez, who, despite pressure from defender Michael Parkhurst, fired a left-footed shot over Reis for a goal, only to have it disallowed by referee Kevin Stott for offside." (http://www.americansoccernews.net/mls/mlsnews/051113gal-revs.shtml)

"After Joseph hesitated on his way to strike his attempt, Onstad jumped off his line, dove to his left and saved the effort as a number of Dynamo players also raced into the area. Referee Kevin Stott spotted an infraction and called for a retake, leaving the Dynamo players incensed and earning Ngwenya a yellow card for dissent." (http://houston.mlsnet.com/news/team_news.jsp?ymd=20070722&content_id=107200&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&team=t200)

"Bad officiating marred this match as Kevin Stott got three calls horribly wrong. One, he should have red carded Nick Garcia for a last man takedown on Chad Barrett that would make Bob Backlund proud. How he escaped a red is beyond me given the laws of the game. Second, Stott fell hook, line and sinker for the penalty box flop from Ivan Guererro. Garcia again was the player involved but for once he was innocent. And lastly he gave a makeup PK to the Wizards with Argentinean Carlos Marinelli's flop in the 90th minute. I know Marinelli is from Argentina because announcer Glenn Davis told me so no less than 64 times during his 45 minutes on the pitch."

"I thought Stott did an excellent job of consistently booking for play that crossed the line he set – until the overtime, when Franchino took out Donovan from behind. That tackle was more reckless than several that did receive bookings, but Stott demurred, as it would have been Franchino’s second. In my games, if you warrant receiving a caution, you’d better be extra careful that you don’t earn a second one; I would never let someone who was already booked get away with a play like that just so I wouldn’t have to send him off." (http://www.refblog.com/pivot/entry.php?id=511)

Anonymous said...

"And Rhine is HORRIBLE, and shows again why he should NEVER be a starting player much less a RB. Supersub/Utilityman? fine. Would have rather had Pitch...."

Lets give Bobby a break, he is a little long in the tooth to be marking Donovan but overall he has played very, very well this season, esp. vs. DC Utd and Houston recently.

Pitch blew it on LAs last goal, which was the winning goal, as the very first post here detailed. You talk about HORRIBLE, Pitch's play on LAs last goal was horrible, at least Bobby didn't make any mental errors, Pitch made a huge one that kept FCD from miraculously getting a draw (with the subsequent Thompson header).

Anonymous said...

yes, except last night was not consiered an MLS game.

Thanks for that. I think that, despite the loss, the high-scoring game just might have saved the evening for FCD, as far as the fair-weather fans go. You'll get another chance at some of them.

It was very nice to have a large crowd cheer the hoops instead of being a minority in our own stadium.

TWENTY OBSERVATIONS:

1. Sala- I want Ray Burse in goal until you are healthy. My mom wouldn't let in four goals in seventeen minutes. At least you didn't sucker punch a twelve year old after the game.

2.Bobby Rhine- yeah, maybe he was overmatched against Landon but that is a COACHING ERROR. Bobby can't be faulted for the poor marking by Serioux, Moor and Gbandi in the middle.

3. Gbandi- TRADE HIM NOW. Worst performance in a Dallas uniform ever. Anyone else notice his less than enthusiastic tracking back? As when he is beaten he doesn't give chase. Offered NOTHING in this game. He is a STUMP.

4.Serioux- needs Goodson. Slow? Maybe it has to do with his seven months off due to injury.

5. Moor- Stay at RB. Enough said.

6. Richetti- was he there? Needs to become the ball winner he was in his first three games.

7. Saragosa- ditto of Richetti. Dax may make you see reserve games only.

8. Toja- do you have a twin brother by any chance? Please teach Gbandi how to tackle, win the ball and not fall down.

9. Alvarez- "keep taking it to them" doesnt mean dribbling the world EVERY time. Improve the consistency. With Nunez going to the DFW Tornado you have a green light. Floor it dude!!!

10.Ruiz- I still think you are a classless gutter punk, but you're our classless gutter punk. Less theatrics, more goals. When your back to knocking in fifteen goals a season you can bitch at the ref or roll on the ground. Until then STFU and play. FANTASTIC performance tonight however! My opinion of you might change if you show the fight you did when you misplayed a pass to Dax and CHASED back thirty+ yards to defend. Gbandi take note.

11. Ricardinho- get well SOON. Injured Ricci Bobby means no MLS Cup.

12. Pitch- acceptable. What a lot of these boobs on this blog don't realize is that there were only three in the back and the space you had to cover. No blame here- I blame the loss of possession downfield for that goal.

13. Oduro- You are faster than the Road Runner (beep beep!) but he has better touch. One question: Could you finish a ham sandwich?

14. McCarty- why did you not start? You are OUR NEW #10 !!! The game definitely changed once you came on. In five years you will be our franchise player.

15. Abe- Mr Reliable. Good for a goal a game. It doesn't matter if he starts or plays ten minutes, Abe gets a goal.

16.Morrow- ? WTF ? Must have been some halftime speech.

17.Training & Medical staff- ? WTF ? Why do we have so many guys going down with hamstrings and MCL's ?

What are you guys doing? Duckwalks?

18.Hitchcock-
a. Sign Toja to a loooong performance based contract. No guaranteed crap like Ruiz.
b. Trade Gbandi. For a new medical staff.
c. Kick the living crap out of Alexi Lalas. What a douchebag.
d. NEW fan club/boster club/supporters group/nerds whatever they call themselves is needed. The Inferno is a non entity.

19.Inferno- by the end of the season there will be three guys SITTING over there. What's with your lack of numbers. For whatever reason no one wants to join you. Maybe if you tailgated at the stadium and not half a mile away.

20. Everyone else- thanks for not going home at halftime. If you got nothing to cheer about at least BOO OR JEER anything by the opponent or the ref.

I thought the pitch near the south goal looked to be in horrible shape.

Sad to see us out of this tourny.

I do have to say, all these people who keep saying take Donovan out of the National team...

Did he dribble through half our team and score? Or is that just me?

If you want to see classless taunting, watch the end of last years playoff defeat.

I kinda laughed at Landon. Heck, was it dumb, of course, was it funny, yes. You have to laugh at a game where we give up 4 goals in 20 minutes.
Landon has scored some good goals this Superliga, and set up even more.

On the bright side, if the Galaxy win Superliga, the MLS will get their absolute best media exposure.

DC and Houston are the better teams, but my statement still stands. As far as media exposure for the MLS, the Galaxy have them beat.

actaully, if somehow (unrealistic) the LA teams wins, it will be credited to Beckham and the rest of MLS will not get just respect. It would be far better for DC or Houston to win. Maybe a bit less media attention, but more credibility to MLS.

Well, “The Administrator” has censored my elaborate and lengthy blog from last night. It was nice to see the feedback from fellow bloggers prior to being Administrated. Thanks!
Nutshell version of last night’s diatribe: disappointment of Beckham’s no-show, disgusting attitude of the LaLa Galaxy, FCD’s defence giving ironic definition to the old “left back in the dressing room” elementary school jokes, true heart and spirit in the second 45 (a different team!), the sublime SuperLiga officiating (again), Landon Donovan’s inspirational gesture to the youth of tomorrow and finally the anti-Beckham banners that were proudly displayed on the big screens.
I may have expanded too much on those nuggets with some superlative adjectives – I guess that may have rankled some of The Administrator’s vetting principles. However, I’ll paraphrase with less color: Sala & Richetti need to go NOW! They were both awful (images of Chef Ramsay yelling at them to get out of the kitchen sums up how I feel about those two muppets). As much as I reluctantly agree with the Gooner’s tactics to right the listing ship, Toja was truly the man of the hour. What a phenomenal performance. If his ethic could rub off on some of his team-mates, PHP would be the new cathedral of football overnight – keep this man! The atmosphere last night was nothing short of electric - what football is all about. The result, while obviously not good for SuperLiga ambitions was one of those once in a lifetime experiences. You don’t see 1950s no-subs, no defence scores like that in this day and age – certainly not at this level. Relish those memories and clip out the report from this morning’s paper (but not that pathetic editorial by Kevin Sherrington).
On the subject of Beckham and whether you agree with the decision or not, the most poignant part of the night for me was when I met up with one of my mates later. He was with his daughter in her LA Beckham replica shirt with the sign she had spent the last two days making (NOT one that was displayed on screen!). She was gutted. This is the impact he has, he knows it, the Galaxy knows it, and the league knows it. Unfortunately FC Dallas had to be ones to deal with the wreckage. I don’t sympathize with those who overpaid to attend their one game of the decade. They bought the hype and they should have thought about the what-ifs. Maybe in hindsight the marketing needs to stress that players get injured or suspended occasionally.
Beckham will get here eventually. I’m actually going to cheer Role Model Donovan and his team-mates all the way into the play-offs so they come back to PHP and face the backlash of last night’s result in the form of a one-sided thrashing. I know our lads will not forget how they performed last night and will be keen to make amends.
Until the next one,
The Frisco Yid

if any of you guys are complaining about landon donovan's goal celebration, your pathetic. if that's what you really need to pick on cuz your team lost. you are looking WAY too deep into this, stop complaining there's been worse celebrations anyhow, and no one is bitching about them. it's sad you need to start picking on someone's goal celebration during a game, granted, the cut throat thing might not have been the wisest choice, but your acting like he kicked everyone in the balls and he was being overly cocky, it's called the intensity of the game, anyoen know plays a sport of any sorts would know. so for God's sake find something else to pick on cuz this is ridiculous

No what is patheitc is that people support Donovan's low class actions. It isn't about winnning or losing, it is about being a man and setting an example for others. We don't need scum like Donovan on the USMNT.

To the LA-LA whining about how "awesome" Donovan is whilst in the same sentence saying that his "celebration" was not the "wisest" of choices, you simply echo what I mentioned earlier. At this level, you are a role model. He let himself, his club and the US team down when he did that. It's not about how he irritated the Dallas fans, it's about the kids who saw that. He didn't do it in front of the "Infernal", he did it where he knew it would piss people off. By the way, if you haven't figured it out, it worked and now our opinion of him dropped several more degrees. This is a guy that can't hack Europe and will never be a world-class player because he won't allow himself to play against the very best in the world. He is certainly one of the better players on the current US roster, but he is immature and lacks the class to be anything close to Beckham and no disrepect intended, even Juan Toja or Carlos Ruiz. He has clearly had someone lean over and lend him something other than milk on his cornflakes and he ain't happy about it.
Two years ago, I stayed at the same hotel as the US lads did in Chicago. I chatted with many of the team, especially Kasey Keller (Yid God) and exchanged friendly banter with most of the team due to my son & I wearing our England shirts. Donovan - couldn't be bothered to remove his iPod buds out of his ears.... oh and by the way, he really is a short-arse....
