Three FCD Players up for Sports Awards

Dario Sala, Pablo Ricchetti, and Juan Toja are nominees for the first ever "Tecate Premios Deportes" (Tecate Sports Awards), as announced by Univision today. Comprised of Hispanic athletes in ten different categories, the nominees were selected for their talent, character and perseverance, as well as their contributions to and impact on the Hispanic community.

The nominees were selected by a distinguished panel of current and former professional athletes and sports writers. The judging criteria for the awards included the athletes' statistical excellence, participation in a televised professional sport in the United States during 2007, cumulative impact on their team and in the sport, and their reputation as a role model for the Hispanic community.

The FCD players are up for the All-Star Team of the Year, nominated with two other players from Mexico's First Division in their respective positions: Dario's competition is Club America's Guillermo Ochoa and Atlante's Federico Villar...Pablo is up against Gerardo Torrado of Cruz Azul and Jaime Correa from Pachuca for Defensive Midfielder...and Toja is grouped with Chivas Guadalajara's Ramon Morales and Toluca's Antonio Naelson Zinha for best midfielder.

The awards will be presented during a celebrity-filled "red carpet" celebration at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California, and will be broadcast on the Univision Network on Sunday, July 20th. Unfortunately, we just found out about this - and online voting apparently is closed. Congrats to all three for being nominated!

Other MLS players are also nominated. Click here for full release.

Such a shame no one was aware about the voting. I would have loved to have voted for these 3...
they're my favorite FCD players. I guess like anything else, it's an honor to have been nominated.

Couldn,t that award be construed as racist? I could imagine the outcry if an FC Dallas player had the chance to win the award for favorite caucasian player! Just an observation.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^I thought that's what the All-Star game was and the end of the year MLS and team awards?

Juan Toja was an all star, so that kinda borks your argument.

Not that I agree with the original post.

racist??? oh shut up with that! They are three great players that are inspirational to hispanic children because they are good role models. Hispanic kids do not have alot of people they can see on tv or in power so Im glad they honor those making a difference for their community in a positive way. Congrats guys!! Pasedena is beautiful by the way.

Congrats to the River Plate North trio!!!

And another bang up job by the PR staff for failing to find out about this until after voting had closed. Marketing geniuses!

Yeah, what the heck is that racism comment? It's not racist to reward positive role models in a community forced to pull itself up from abject poverty. If you wanna talk about racism, how about all the soccer moms driving their suburbans to leagues that are well funded and supplied, while poor kids are forced to play with crappy old soccer balls at the parks across the street? Richetti, Toja, and Sala are good role-models to those poor kids and they give people hope in situations where they are facing the consequences of an unfair society.

Folks - ragging on the PR department for not letting you know about something they were not informed about until yesterday is just inappropriate. This has nothing to do with FCD. It was put together by Univision and Tecate.

How about a big Thank You to the PR staff for letting us know about it?

Congratulations to Dario, Pablo, and Juan. I am honored to know you and happy that such talented and respected men play for FCD!

Agreed - these chumps that come this blog and make lame criticisms are the following:

People that are negative and have a vendetta against people - departments in the admin . . .

Whatever . . . it is just a Tecate/univision All-star team . .

Like that lame person that criticizes the PR dept. really cares - they just want to attack and complain . . .
