Day Between Travels

On the day after returning from Midland and the day before heading out to Denver for Saturday's game against the Rapids, the team went through an hour-long practice session on the adidas Field. It was a split session this morning, with the guys that played the majority of Tuesday night's friendly partaking in a recovery workout before ending with a game of soccer tennis.

The rest of the team did some 6 v 6 work (with goalkeepers) on a shortened field. Sticking around after practice to work on crosses and volleys on GK Josh Lambo were Dave van den Bergh, Blake Wagner, David Ferreira, and Jeff Cunningham. Michael Dello-Russo did not train today after picking up a mild concussion from a collision in Tuesday night's game. He's expected to be out for a few more days until symptoms subside. Joining the team in training today was Leone Cruz, senior defender at SMU out of Round Rock, TX. Cruz will be continue as an additional practice player for at least the next week.

Kenny Cooper wasted 3 excellent scoring opportunities last night against Honduras.

wrong. they were all 1/2 chances and he put them all on frame...

Wasted? LIES!!!!!!!!!!!

If he used some sense of soccer skill and first touch, he could have easily beat the defender each time. However he tried to first-time each shot with no patience. Kenny knows that he should have maintained possession of the ball and found a better shot. Each 1/2 chance should have been a full chance. Anyone can shoot at the goal, but it doesn't make it a good shot.

All 3 shots had to do with Kenny's reluctance to use his size and left foot. He should have cut the ball back against the movement of the defender. Easy goals with patience.

OMG !!!
Are you both serious ? he put 3 shots on frame. He has very little patience - but its soccer. you don't hit all of the curve balls thrown into the strike zone.

Our feelings don't really matter. Kenny is an excellent player and excellent players know that they should have done much better with their chances. I know for a fact that Kenny wished he had a couple of thost plays back. He knows that he should have slotted at least 1 of those. Ronaldo would have kept those plays alive knowing full well that he wasn't going to be fouled in the box.

once again, 3 shots on frame doesn't mean good shots. They have these things called goalkeepers.

That was a very coherent and well thought out comment. Obviously not a player of any kind.

Some people here are complete idiots. Kenny was in the game for the waning minutes of the game and put himself into position to get three shots on goal. Ching had one really nice header. It was a good thing he was on the field for 80 minutes in order to cash in on this particular chance.

Soccer is a game of percentages as well as a game of serendipity and fortunate bounces of the ball. You have to create 10 chances to get one into the goal...or else get a fortunate bounce.

I think Kenny made as much of his opportunity as possible given how brief it was. There was one strike where I do wish his feet were planted perfectly to take a one touch blast, but that just didn't happen. He had to trap the ball first, which gave the defender JUST enough time to slide in for the deflection. Such things happen all the time to all strikers. Lighten up people. You can bet that Cooper will give any chance he has to wear the USA shirt a 100% full-out effort, which is all any fan can ask for.

He has international goals already, and I am confident that there are more to come in the future.p

Obviously you didn't see donovan against Brasil. Almost the same circumstances, 1st-touch to the left, calmly put it in the side of the net. Time on the field has nothing to do with a poor first or no 1st-touch. I guarantee if you ask Cooper, he will say that he should have done better to make the shots he wanted, not to settle.

If a defender has "JUST enough time to slide in for the deflection", Cooper should fake kick, slide the ball around the defender, shoot, defender still on the ground. Basic soccer 101.
